running discs on a non disc frame

im currently running a canti only frame that was built long before the relm of the disc brake becoming mainstream but im being drawn towards discs slowly as i run them on all my other bikes
what i want to know is has anyone used one of the adaptors that go on the canti boss and run down the back of the frame and if so have you had any negative effects using the adaptor
in my eyes a frame that wasnt designed to have discs may not have the required strength in the rear end to cope with the extra strain placed on it under braking and could cause damage to the frame
also has anyone got any pics of frames with these fitted as i imagine they may look a bit crap
thanks

well first off does your frame have flat dropouts or not?
Or what is the frame?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

frame is a 1998 gary fisher supercaliber, what do you mean by flat dropouts?I recon im the tinyest horse you will ever see0

i mean flat with no profileing on them as the adaptor needs a flat surface.
Is it an OCLV version?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

ah ok mate i cant think off hand about the profile
OCLV means nothing to me either, can you explain?
cheers

I don't think anyone but Nick knows what he is asking you.
My mate runs an aftermarket adapter on his old spesh full susser - its just an aluminium clamp around the dropout - I cant recall how it looks particularly but it seems to work better than his ageing Hayes rear brake! His bike has put up with years of heavy abuse (including dh race back in its early days) so I reckon the system works ok.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
Optimum Compaction Low Void.

so get some pictures up and we can see if we think it might or might not work."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

it dont matter now guys, this bike is getting downgraded to comuter status as think iv just got sorted with a carbon race bike :-)I recon im the tinyest horse you will ever see0

Apologies SS - all the mods know what it means! Kudos to you 8)
Ok so a carbon frame (esp an old one) might not be the best thing to be clamping ali adapters for disc brakes!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
Noo a Kelin/trek etc manufacturing process.
Many current Treks are OCLV

I like to think of bike frames as being simple and all the complex stuff going on outside - it seems I am deluding myself!
It may just be my own sense of paranoia but I just dont trust carbon....I expect everything to fall apart in a shower of plastic. Steel and ali thats what a bike should be made from!Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
