Hi, my son and I have just got into road cycling and would like to buy a turbo trainer for the winter. Not sure it matters but obviously a big age gap and level of potential fitness, 56 /23 I'd appreciate any advice /guidance on types, what to look for in terms of features and where to look.

Ive got a cheap magura ( i think thats what its called ) Its a basic turbo , where the 'drag' is created using magnets , at least I think thats how it works. ther is no remote drag adjustment but there is a lever on the 'mag hub ' that allows some adjustment.

I would get hold of two turbos, Its much easier to stay motivated and is less boring when training with a buddy. try to get hold of 'spinnervals' on dvd or as an audio recording as they are a structured session that really helps get the most out of the session and make sure you dont get bored doing too much of the same thing.. They are the soundest thrashing that I have endured for a while.

BTW my turbo cost £40 second hand and was virtually unused.

Oh and a fan of some description and a few bottles of water are also a good idea if you are turboing indoors...

I have an Elite Hyrdaforce which is about 10 years old. The frame is very solid and well made. The drag wheel is sprung loaded onto the back wheel and has 3 levels of resistance. I have only ever used it on setting 1 easiest and 2. The adjustment of resistance is by cable to the handle bars where you can mount a lever. It's been excellent. Has been maintenance free and not missed a beat. It cost about £120 (reduced from £140) from Condor as I say about 10 years ago.

For similar money or a tad more you could probably buy something pretty decent with basic computer analysis as well. If I were buying now I would look for same make but about £150-160 which I guess would get you a pretty nice one.

If both you and your son will be turboing together as already stated 2 might be better than one as you could train together. You might also get a discount if you bought two.
Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.
Think how stupid the average person is.......
half of them are even more stupid than you first thought.
