got my old xtc out to go to work on the other day and it has developed what can only be described as a slipping of the rear cassette, it feels like it is spinning freely when i pedal but is only an intermittent fault, any ideas ?

Either a worn chain & cassette, or knackered freehub.

Does it spin freely by hand or when driven by the chain?

    freebody/ freehub needs looking at.
