Not caused by the chain.

The scratches run around the chainstays of both my bikes (only on the chain side).

Could it be, and this is all I can think of, that the chainstay protectors that I use scratch the paint when they rotate?

I use the 'normal' velcro protectors, such as this-

As long as the frame isn't cracking (as I first thought).

Yes, the lizardskin on mine has caused the same, lots of light scratches on the chainstay, especially after I ride in the wet.

Dirt gets under the protector, it moves = scratches.

Which is why shock boots are not really worth the money either.

  • Could you not cable tie towards each end of the chainstay protector?

It may stop movement and also dirt getting in.

    well from the info given?

a picture of i nice clean frame with a lizard skin in it.

    maybe even the makers photo.

I was not going to commit to anything.

for all i can tell the frame may be cracked to hell or it may be nothing...

    Excuses excuses

It would appear that the scratches are only 'paint deep'. but still, black scratches on a white frame are a shock.

how can products like this be produced (and bought  )?. This is an outrage.

My giant came wth a lovely thick and soft neoprene protector, i've had a lizard skin and found that to be hard n the paintwork.

Id look at changing the protector personally, failing that use helicopter tape underneath.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
