Leg problem

My left leg has been giving me some grief of late. I've not had any "offs" or had any accidents on foot that I can recall. Two things are happening. Firstly the large muscle on the front of my leg goes numb from time to time. It lasts a couple of minutes at a time. I usually try and rub it vigorously in case this may help. I have noticed it happening during non-cycling times but not so often.
Secondly sometimes I feel like my lleft eg has a muscle pull and is weak so I'm compensating with the other leg when pedalling. These two issues are not constant ..they happen and they go away and they don't happen every ride
I always stretch before I ride as I used to be a competitive skater and was heavily into Martial Arts back in the day.
Anyone with a background in sports physiology give me any ideas that my help stop this or am I just getting old and it's normal?

No thoughts on what the problem could be but I think you should stretch after a gentle warm up and be careful to not stretch cold muscles.

    IMHO see a doctor.

Dont leave it - see a professional gp or perhaps a physio.

Sciatica? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica. But yes, ask a doctor.

Go see a physio or sports therapist, they will do tests to determine the cause (muscle/tendon/ligament).

May even be something like compartment syndrome, the muscles in the lower leg becoming too large for the fascia within which they are enclosed, which is relatively inflexible. So pressure builds up. This is one of the forms of "shin splints", so would generally effect both legs not just the one.

A GP wont give as good treatment/advice as physio/sports therapist.

Probably not Sciatica, but there is a simple test they will carry out to determine if that is the cause.

I did qualify as a sports therapist but no longer pratice.

Thanks for the advice guys. There's a sports physiology guy at the local rec centre I found out yesterday , I'll go have a word with him.
