I've been cleaning the running gear after a few rainy rides and wondered what the plastic thingy behind the cassette is for, if it is vital and how I'd get rid if not, as it makes it a right bugger to clean the cassette properly.

Known as a Dork Disc, it's to prevent people who don't know how to adjust their gears from sending the mech into the spokes. Take the wheel out and it just unclips.

    Hi FeynmanC,

I have just taken that off my bike as it was all twisted and started rubbing on the cassette when I was out riding!

    Just take it off mate.

Cheers guys, thought it was pointless!

One problem, looks like it's one piece and i'll have to take the cassette off to get rid, either that or snap it in some way.

    Am I being dim?

No, you're quite correct. A pair of wire cutters will make short work of it with the cassette in situ.
