Will 9 speed shifters work with an 8 speed cassette or will the shifting be off?

no, it won't work
unless you ahve some special early dura-ace 8sp that actually had 9 sp spacing, on all the others 8sp spacing is wider than 9sp
watch SS come on and say I'm wrong about that now :oops:Everything in moderation ... except beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
Don't think it'll work. For each shift the shifter will pull the amount of cable needed to go one cog on a 9 speed cassette, which will be different from an 8 speed... won't it?0
