9sp Shifters With 8sp Cassette

Will 9 speed shifters work with an 8 speed cassette or will the shifting be off?

    no, it won't work

    unless you ahve some special early dura-ace 8sp that actually had 9 sp spacing, on all the others 8sp spacing is wider than 9sp

    Don't think it'll work. For each shift the shifter will pull the amount of cable needed to go one cog on a 9 speed cassette, which will be different from an 8 speed... won't it?

    This is what I was thinking but I thought I would ask just to check.
