Frame differences?

Heya all,

Frames.. Not taking about the materials their made from(Steel, Alu, Ti,Carbon) more the shapes of generic frames is a Mountain frame much different from a Road frame?

-I've got a few older frames about and they seem almost identical to the few mountain bike frames and this mountain bike frame I'm de-rusting I'm thinking I might just get some 700cc wheels, forks? and handle bars(not forgetting some shifting levers)

Am I barking up the wrong tree, I'd really like some advice on this if possible please.
