Savlon's a reasonable substitute for Chamois cream.

Seriously, I should't wear pants under my cycling shorts?

I always have. What will happen? Will my little fella fall off? Breaking out in a cold sweat now.

Really!? OO err when did you decide to be brave enough to try that?

    All the time.

Maybe Dutch undercarriages are just made of sterner stuff and can handle more of a punishing .

No underwear and I've never used chamois cream and never had a problem. And I used to spend many hours in the saddle.

Old cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster
  • No underwear. It's just another layer to rub you and, if you ride long enough for long enough, encourage the build up of gunk in hair follicles and various minor hassles like cysts eventually. Pantage will also pinch you and just add to the discomfort, but you won't even realise it until you try it commando.

Put it this way, most half decent cycling clothing is designed to be worn right next to the skin and do their job best that way. You'll have to make one last tackle adjustment before you get onto the saddle but it's worth it for the end comfort.

    Question 2, yes.

Mine regularly falls off during my (panted) short commute.

All depends on the pants -one seam in the wrong place and, oh dear,

Question is why would you want to keep your shreddies on. - modesty I assume but a decent chamois shouldcover your modesty well enough. your shorts are not going to suddenly fall off.

Also - VPL - its not a good look.

Hmm! I'm a strictly no sub duds man....Make itch like crazy, and as someone said, get a seam in the wrong place and all hell can break loose..

  • Pants are a no no! And only use chamois cream on long rides! Don't see the point on sub two hour rides as its expensive and the more u'll use it more u'll need to use it! It's good to toughen that area up...

I've never used chamois cream but there are times after a long ride I feel it may have helped. What do you recommend and do you apply it to the pad or to your butt before you ride?

I dont wear my bib shorts commando, surely people get crack stains in your shorts by doing this?

I wear skimpy briefs to hold the tackle in place and nullify the unlikey and unhygienic event of skid marks. I would just imagine the padded section would look all disgusting? :?

if your shorts fit properly, there should be no need to wear anything underneath them. They are designed to be worn that way...

Shorts are shorts softlad, do you go commando wearing football/rugby/generic types?

I guess im wrong here, it would explain the more prominent bulging tackle. One day I may try this, I just thought it would feel wrong.

what relevance do football or rugby shorts have to cycling shorts..?

Look, you can wear anything you want under your shorts - it's a matter of preference. Howvere, they are designed to be worn with nothing else under them. If you want to use creme, fine, the stuff I use suggests you rub it on the skin, not the shorts.

If you're worried about skid marks, wipe your arse properly! :P

They're not though, are they? Rugby/football shorts are just protecting your modesty. Bike shorts are designed to reduce chafing by moving with you- any friction is between the shorts and the saddle, rather than the shorts and you. To do this they need to be as close fitting as possible.

But if you're going to wear your shreddies under them then yes, you might as well just wear any old shorts.

They are shorts softlad. Stuff that is not shorts specifically have different names like a jockstrap, undergarment, briefs, trunks etc. (I dont see the relevance nitpicking peoples sentences..?)

When you buy/wear any clothes they have their category. I would have thought if these items were meant to be worn bareback then they would have a different name. Cycling garment, I dunno, I dont really care.

A regional thing I have noticed is people in the north west call legwear 'pants' like jeans and trousers, whereas where I grew up in the south pants refer more to briefs or boxers.

sorry, I don't know what you are talking about...but if you like wearing a g-string under your cycling shorts, then crack on...
