Facing Frame before fitting new BB

I currently run a Powerspline, but having got through my second in 1500miles I've now decided to upgrade to an external BB. The item in question is a Firex with GXP BB. It'll be fitted to a BeOne Nirvana frame that is about 300 miles old.
The manual says for best results face the frame. I could guess what this is, but can anybody give me the definitive answer and is it really necessary on such a new frame.
Many thanks for any replies.

You need to take it to a bike shop - it prepares the faces of the BB shell so the seperate bearing cups align properly. About 10 - 15 quid.0

Thanks for the reply, but what does that actually mean? (learning as I go along)

They thread a tool in the bottom bracket shell, which scrapes a bit of material away form the face of the shell.0

Now I'm with you. Does that mean the BB Shell ends aren't Parallel at the moment, or just not parallel enough to fit external BB?0

The latter. They may be ok, but having it done is worth the cash and will ensure the bearings last as long as possible.0

Thanks for that. The mist has lifted and its suddenly become clear

Ive got a new frame on order (Charge Duster) and intend getting everything faced up (BB, Headtube, disc mounts) before i build it up... As its a steel frame will the exposed bare metal not be susceptible to rust?0

Yep. But there will be something against it!0

thats true...guess i'll just have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't corrode too badly...
ps how do you link to a pic like you have in your signature....love those carbon zaskar frames my mate has one....lighter than my road bike lol0 -
You need to upload the pic elsewhere ie photobucket, then link to here.
Think it shows how in the FAQ.
Aye, are nice frames!0
