I have had my Gt avalanche 1.0 for 6 months now, The chain snapped first about 2 months ago and now its happened again on the same chain, I used quick release links to put it back together and i have kept it clean and oiled regularly.
I have now ordered a new Shimano Dura ace xtr chain in the meantime i am using the same chain with 2 quick release links, just to get me to work.
Why did these snap ? the gear change seemed smooth enough.

Were you riding uphill when you changed and it snapped?

Chains are usually very strong in the direction of drive but high lateral loadings of the type you get when working across the chain line will over stress the chain. For that reason you should not use the outer gears with the inner gears. For example do not use smallest gear on the back with smallest on the front or largest on the front with largest on the back. You may just of had a cheap or incorrectly assembled chain so changing to the XTR should remedy the problem assuming that the drive line is properly aligned.

If Carlsberg made chains, they'd make XTR chains.

if it was the chain that came with the bike then it was probably a crap one!

TMG : I was going up a slight hill but didn't change gear at that time.
