greasing a chain? a la contador

reading on cyclingnews about contador's bike and its smooth set up they state that his mechanic oils the chain with a medium/light oil then greases it to seal it?

Anyone familiar with this method? is it lithium grease they use? It looks like he's using sapim lubricants fwiw.

    It could be subterfuge to fool his rivals into greasing their chains, thereby slowing them down ;-)

    I saw someone did it in the TT too - I think it was Zabriskie.

    It would only seem to make sense on wet days - on a dry day if you're doing it each day (as the mechanics must do) you could use just about anything.
    I'm left handed, if that matters.
  • i remember reading that on wet stages/classics it's not usunual to grease up chains i just struggle with the thought of putting lithium grease on a chain? (and that's all i seem to see being sold nowadays)

    Any decent bike shop will have teflon grease which is far better than lithium for most bike uses.
