i have a gt aggressor xc1 2008, i am wondering whether it is possible to fit a rear pannier rack to the bike as i have heard that you can't.

You most probably can, but you will need one for disc brakes and will probably need p-clips

You can also fit the Tubus Disco rack:

It's quite a bit more expensive, but it mounts on an elongated wheel skewer (included), which means you can fit it without having to resort to P-clips. So if you combine it with the seatpost clamp rack mount above, you get a very neat solution.
Note, however, that the skewer mount makes removing the wheel a little more fiddly, as you have to remove the skewer completely to get it off.0 -

You could fit a Toppeak beam rack like this.
http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Topeak-Beam-Rac ... k_1126.htm. and you wouldn't need to worry about mounting points.
I bought one a couple of weeks ago and they're good quality. They're made from alloy so reasonably light (Tredz are the cheapest).
If its an 18n inch frame or over you would need to get the V type for large frames.
Alternatively Argos do one for a tenner although its not quick release.
