Saddle Stem Diameter

Hi
A bit of a shot in the dark - I've got 80s (?) Raleigh Pursuit and need to replace the saddle stem as it's too short. I'm intending to drop into my LBS with the old stem on the way home this evening but as I can't accurately measure the diameter and was wondering if anyone would happen to know off the top of their head what the size should be as it may be cheaper to order from t'interweb......
Cheers

You could try taking the seatpost completely out - some seatposts have their diameter stamped or printed on them.Cycling weakly0
