switching to XC tyres from road slicks

hi, currently riding a GT zum2 hybrid with maxxis road slicks, which are great for on road, but we're getting a bit more adventurous, and after spending a day sliding about i'd really like to upgrade to an xc tyre
the only thing is - currently they are a 26x1.5 tyre - but i can't see any xc tyres with this spec, so will a larger tyre say a 26x 2 or 26 x 2.5 fit my wheel or do i have to fork out for new wheels too?!?
