sacro-iliac joint grr!

I've a pain in the arse had for weeks now grumbling away. Sacro-iliac joint pain - left side pain goes into the buttock. Its uncomfortable rather than really painful. I haven't yet been the doc but wondered if any of you have suffered with this. My hunch is that my saddle is too far back as I find myself often more on the narrow part than supported fully on the wide part. I've done the plumb bob alignment though - knee to pedal line.
Any advice please? Cheers.

Have I suffered with sacro illac pain - how long do have ? - on and off for 20 years !!! - here are some pointers of whats worked (sometimes)
Stiffness is your enemy - stretch those hamstrings at least twice a day - if these go tight they pull on your pelvis - which can trigger a bout of pain
Another excercise - lie on your back and pull your knee into your chest - don't go mad - but think that you are trying to 'gap' those joints.
bite the bullet and get a bike fit - I only did a cheapo £35 - but the suggested changes really helped.
Take ibuprofen - take a few doses a day - for a few days - see if this helps.
Get a neoprene back support only about £10 from argos - wear this and go for a gentle cycle ride - this has the effect of warming the joint - which can clear up a bout.
None of the above work all time - and none is a 100% cure. The closest thing to a cure for me - was a steriod injection - I ve had a fair few since - and for me they work. However the more stretching - and core body workouts I do - I need the jabs - less and less. Be warned though if you want this on the NHS - you will have to ask - they won't offer.
I would go to your gp first - he probably won't refer for physio - until you go back two or three times - may as well start the process now - if you get better in the interim - no harm done.
let me know how you get on0 -
Hurts like a bugger when you partially dislocate it.0

I was off work for 5 months with this 2 years ago.
Stretching has got to become second nature for you. It's a hassle, but it's your friend.
Seeing an oesteopath helped me a lot.
Once I got past the initial stage of not being able to sit or bend, exercise wise - cycling IN MODERATION helped. My consultant actually recommended cycling as part of my rehab. Something about a non-stressful way of putting the joint through it's range of movement.
Hope this helps.0 -
Mrs Matt had it when she was pregnant (joints get looser) - she did Pliates which helped a treat. Went very soon after she had our little boy.0

Hi,
Been on a similar disaster with piriformis which is a pain in the arse!
Spent a wedge on physio some of which was very helpfull some was just cash hungry dreaming....bought a SACROWEDGY off the net via the states very cynical but first time I used it felt a huge difference and problem solved....been in pain for about 7 months stopped cycling totally changed saddles physio etc.
To cut a very long story short stretching is very helpfull and look at other issues that may be causing problems...mine was works vehicle seating position.
Sacrowedgys about $35 which is a steal...could use a rolled up towel but difficult to position as well.
Worth considering if the other (good) advice ref stretching isnt working.

Sacro-iliac joint pain - left side pain goes into the buttock. Are you sure its not a sciatic nerve pain? Did you have an MRI scan? Get a referral from the GP and anti-inflammatory to suit you.
But got to the GP and get it checked out now especially if pain is inthe deep cheek buttock muscle as it could be the sign of back trouble not just Sacro-iliac joint

The injections work sometimes ( again ask for one from GP and wait months ) and I'd 2nd the stretching of hamstrings twice a day + core muscle repetetion excersies.0 -
yes had this - it comes back from time to time when I neglect the stretches.
I focus on hip flexors, hamstrings and also do one where I lie on back, bend one leg, hands behind thigh, pull thigh up to chest and a little bit across to opposite shoulder. - really stretches out the right bit.
PM me with your email and I'll email you some exercises that the osteopath gave me to do if you're interested.0 -
I have taken heed and already started the stretches which seems my first step. I've also downloaded some exercises from the Mayo Clinic, core exercises.
I feel a bit daft having tolerated the pain for so long, It was after the Manchester 100km when it properly started and so its nagged since last September. It definately isnt sciatic pain as this pain is different not so sharp or quick.
I've also moved my saddle and I think thats helped though its early days. I will also check out the suggested devices too.
Really great to be part of this cycling community! Thanks guys..
