tightening spokes...

My spokes keep on getting really loose. How tightly should I tighten them? I know this is a very basic question but I also am aware that over tightening a spoke can mess up a wheel. Cheers.

I'd get them checked out by a builder, spokes shouldn't regularly loosen.

it is not just a case of tightening them.
have a read of the info on sheldons wheel building pages."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

It's not like doing up a bolt that's come loose because one spoke on its own does nothing. A spoke can only do its job if all the other spokes are doing their job too. A properly-built wheel will be in a state of balance with all the spokes being correctly tensioned (tightened) and everything being 'true'.
So it's difficult to answer your question without expanding into the more general topic of wheelbuilding and truing because while spokes need to be nice and tight, simply tightening one spoke will solve nothing as you're closing the door after the horse has bolted. One loose spoke doesn't mean there was a bad spoke, it means the whole wheel probably needs retensioning and truing.0
