any advice on what to look at buying

    £1000 to £2000 is a huge variation in budget.
    You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
    If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
    If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

    Orange 5 & Commencal Meta 5 are two bikes well worth testing, both are very capable trail bikes if you want a full susser.

    I've seen a few really tasty 2008 spec mount visions going for as little as £1250
