Chain slippage?

Hi all,

Just got my Scott Ransom back after 2 months having the forks sorted by Windwave/Marzocchi.

Anyways, while the bike was at my LBS, I got a mini service done, including having a new chain fitted.

Just been out for a very little ride (to the offy!) as I'd fitted new tyres, and now the chain is slipping when I try to 'give it some' or pop a manual.

From what I've read (bike maintenance book) it says either the cassette or middle ring is jiggered, but they were fine.

Bike is going back to LBS first thing, but would welcome any thoughts/opinions/wisdom.

Was hoping after such a long wait I could jump on and enjoy, but alas no.

Off to Sussex Sunday so hope I can get it sorted.

Thanks in advance
BJB

Chain was probably excessively worn and as you say has taken either or both the rings/cassette with it. The old chain will work perfectly well for a period of time but not with new components.

new chain on worn components can = chain slipping, as you say it's either the cassette or chainrings.

the old chain was worn to the components, the new one isn't so that is why it is slipping

If the teeth look 'hooked' & not symmetrical then it is worn, no easy way to check. same with chainrings

Does it skip in every gear on the cassette &/or every chainring?

Although if the old chain was heavily worn (can be checked with a ruler or chain checker) this could indicate that you need a cassette or chainrings or both.

    oh joy.

dont know if they kept the old chain as it was done at lbs.

If they do find it, it should be 2 links per inch?

Will look for hooking and will also check all front rings and cassette sprockets.

All I need after 2 months without it......
