How do I know when my BB is knackered?

RIding back from work last night, I was convinced when i back peddalled for a second that my BB was creaking  , but I couldn't get it to repeat.

After having drawn my attention by that, i was convinced that there was more friction than there should be whilst pedalling... but how do I tell if it was all the mind or not?!

I was really struggling for the rest of the ride trying to work it out, so much so I very nearly went straight into a hedge while looking at my feet!

Any help appreciated.

Take your chain off the chainset and turn the cranks by hand, try and hold it as close to the axle as possibe. If it is biffed you will feel it very clearly. See if you can rock the cranks from side to side. The power of paranoia can be a strange thing but it doesn't mean they're all out to get us.

Good tips. I'll get on it.

    Thanks.
