What is the purpose of this item, and why is it the shape it is?

    fits on the end of the noodle and works as a bellows seal when the brake is operated.

    A what seal now?

    My wife's front brake is missing it, should I dismantle the brakes and put it on?

    its not compulsory thought it should protect the cable.
