Shimano XTR M975 Wheelset and Tyre Compatibility

Not sure if this is the best category to post in but ....
I have a pair of Shmino XTR rims (M975) and a new set of Maxxis Minion DH tyres
Front 26 x 2.5
Rear 26 x 2.35
The rims are UST tubeless compatable but I prefer to ride with tubes. The problem is I simply cannot get these tyres on the rims with or without a tube!
I could possibly squeeze them on tubeless but don't want to be in the situation where I need a tube to get home and simply can't resit the tyre with a tube.
There are UST versions of the Maxxis Minion.
Question is, does anybody have an idea if these tyres will be mountable on the XTR rims before I shall out another 70 quid?
The UST versions of the tyre have a flexible bead (the ones I currently have are wire).
Thanks for any advice! Cheers Robin

they will fit but just will just be a fight. the UST will be just the same.but the tyres will be heavier."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Are you talking about the XT WH-M975 factory wheelset? If so it's really, really not built for 2.5" DH tyres, 19mm scandium rims and 24 spokes really aren't build for any sort of abuse that would require that much tyre.
Top end lightweight XC race wheels combined with huge heavy DH tyres? Seems to be the worst of both worlds with maximum ££ spent. Slow rolling and heavy due to the tyres, too weak to survive drops and jumps due to the wheels.0 -
In a copy of singletrack i was reading the other day, they said that when going tubeless it worked better to run light wheels with heavy tyres for a tough AM wheel over light tyres with heavy wheels.0

These aren't light AM wheels though by a long shot, I don't think they quite meant to this extent. These are the lightest XC, race focused wheels made by Shimano. Very thin walled Scandium rims, 24x 2.0/1.5/2.0 spokes is the equivalent of 24 revolution spokes - lots of places sell these are race only and even then that's assuming you'll have 32 of them.
I wouldn't go higher than 2.35" personally, well tbh I wouldn't use 2.35" on those rims but each to their own :P
What sort of riding is this for just out of interest?Recommended Tire 26 x 1.50-2.25 26 x 1.50-2.250 -

Yes, that wheelset. Thanks for all the responses.
Regards your question Toasty, I ride either XC or DH depending on the day and where we are really. Fortunately, I didn't choose or incur the full cost of the XTR wheels direclty, but now want a setup to cover me for mostly DH I guess. A 2.5 tyre feels the best for what I'm doing most of the time. I'm at best an intermediate rider and doubt I'll ever be riding big drops to be honest.
My current thoughts are to sell the Shimano wheelset and get myself a pair of mid-renage DH wheels although money is the main barrier to doing that at the moment.
Any suggestions on a some DH wheels?0 -
Bigger rims, something like Mavic EX721 or wider for example, Stans Flows are pretty hefty but I can't really comment as I've never thrown mine down a DH course
Something like the new Hope Hoops would be an easy option:

I'm using a set of Pro IIs on Stans Flows on my Meta, overkill possiblyThey'd be about 300g heavier than your XTR wheelset. The mavic rims are a bit more tried and tested and have been around for ages, they're a bit heavier but that's mainly down to eyelets on the nipples which makes them a bit easier to adjust. Both are sub £300 which you'd easily get selling that wheelset.

Listen to Toasty.
Running 2.5 tires on a 19mm XC rim is at best going to cause them to feel loose, at worst the tires will roll of the rim in the corners.
If you want to fit wider tires get wider rims.
Mavic 521's, 721's or anything from Mavic ending in 21 or above ( it refers to the internal width in mm). Alternativley Stans flows (21mm) or DT 5.1(21mm).
You could go wider but from what I have read you will also be using these wheels for XC so I would say a 21 mm rim is a good compromise.0 -
Thanks for the ideas above. Feels like I should source myself some new wheels and pass up the XTRs.
Thanks again for the responses.0
