Right I'm in the inital stages of looking for a new FS bike. I'm going to be using it for a mixture of things, trail centres, cross country rides and general freeriding, so basically I'm after a bit of an all mountain bike. Budget is at the lower end, as near to £1000 as possible.

From what I've been looking at so far I'm being drawn to the Giant range of bikes. The Trance X5 has been getting awesome reviews, but from looking at Pauls cycles I see for just under £100 more I can get an 08 Giant Reign 1 which is very tempting...

Opinions, other options?

Depends what you mean by freeriding - the Reign is better suited than the trance. Buit will be heavier for general trails and the like.
  • have you considered getting a hardtail?

I been out riding a bit now and found a lot of the good riders have hardtails not FS, as you be suprised what a decent hardtail can do.

many of them said tbh that in the UK there is no need for anything bigger than 4"/100mm, and that only need 100mm+when you go downhill or go to places like USA.

think about what exactly you riding, for roots/rocks/ and most decents a decent hardtail can do, also means much better value.

example, lots of guys i seen with boardman PRO hardtail with the reba race forks..sweet bike..

There are some really rough places in the Uk though - Stainburn, Wharncliffe, and a few of the Scottish places.
