Hey I got a 160 and 180 on my bike right now.
Becuase I do a lot of commuting on the full suss and ride afan and cwmcarn only on occasional weekend once or twice a month, the guy at LBS advised getting 140mm xtr rotors.
He said this would lighten the load and be good for what I need.
I have bought XT brakes with them, just waiting for them to come from shimano.
I only do XC, nothing hardcore.
Thanks guys

Hmmm.... I suspect the guy in your LBS is just wanting another sale and some more work...
Do you find your brakes too powerful? Probably not, as you learn to control the power of your brakes, ever since you first when out. Some people (XC Uber racers) like to run a 160 / 140 setup, as they do nothing hardcore, and like the (very, very marginal) weight saving.
If you are looking to shave of 50ish grams of brake rotor, for a MASSIVE drop in braking power, then do it, but I would leave them 180 / 160.Boo-yah mofo
Sick to the power of rad
Fix it 'till it's broke0 -
He was not making any money off it.
He does tours in france and other parts and gets paid, so he is an actual pro.
I have just not seen many people talk about them here.
Wether I was going to get 140 or 180 he was going to make the same money as he was fitting the whole system for me.
I am debating wether to have a 160 now... :?:
I use my back more that my front as commuting a bit, so should the 160 stick on the rear?
Thanks for your help0 -
If you have different sized rotors the smaller should go on the rear (even if you use it more as your weight shifting under braking means the rear is unloaded and therefore locks up easier). 160 both ends is usually fine for XC. 180 front can be a bit much depending of the actual setup and poss skill level.0

hardly.
if you read any of the disc brake posts on here people are going bigger.
to me 180/160 is right unless you are underfed and weigh just about nothing.
also commuting on a fully! you would do better getting a suitable bike and then you would save a shedload of weight by doing away with the un needed shocks/forks and fat tyres."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

LOL
I only ride on my full suss as got a focus superbud 2008 for £26.00,,, Long story, done C2W then left the company two months later and they told me to keep the bike.
And just want to do this one up.Prob would be better with a HT, but hey got almost a free bike.
Maybe I should do the 160 all around then, dont want to go to 180 TBH.
Thanks guys0 -
I have 160 all round on all my bikes except the DH which is 200 (naturally)
wouldn't consider 140, even on the weight weenie SS bike tbhEverything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer
If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day0 -
I use 160/140 on my XC hardtail & it works fine for me, how much stopping power do you need to lock the rear wheel anyway?
I don't do any huge downhills & have never had it fade on me on single track or on the road.
I still have enough power to do stoppies on the 160mm.0 -

Becuase I do a lot of commuting on the full suss and ride afan and cwmcarn only on occasional weekend once or twice a month, the guy at LBS advised getting 140mm xtr rotors. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -

Not worth it for the weight saving alone unless you race or are building a light bikeScott Scale Custom

I see no problem with 160/140 set up.
Remember bigger numbers = better for XC disks are still over kill good old V brakes were plenty man enouth.0 -
I reckon I could get by with a 140 rear. But 140 front? Nope. Depends on your riding of course but I'm pretty light and I could still push my old XT/XTR 160mm front til it started to fade at times. 180 is working perfectly, I wouldn't have considered downsizing.Uncompromising extremist0

droping a rotor sise for anything other than ultra weight weening, its stupid, welcome the extra power a bigger sise gives. go for 160 back, 180 front.I like bikes and stuff0
