HI,
Im new to this and i have been doing some xc,i went to swinley at the weekend which was great, however my chain was clanging around all over the place on the downhill...
would a chain guide help stop this as my chain has come off a few times and its very annoying, its not a massivly expensive bike but im just looking for a bike that does what i need while i keep learning and falling off.
also are chain guides a universal fit?
Cheers

not universal fit.
and no they dont help much on an XC bike."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If it is a fairly low budget full suspension bike the chain tension will be all over the place and if it has a basic rear mech then the chain will go slack enough to jump the sprockets. It's a good idea to use the bigger front sprockets ie 2 and 3 front when descending as this takes up more slack in the chain. Make sure that your front mech limiters are not allowing it to over shift off the inside of the smalllest chain ring. A better quality rear mech like an XT Shadow http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/mountain- ... -mech.html may help and a chain stay protector http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=29805 will stop all the paint falling off.
As Nick says a chain device does not help on an XC bike as they are primarily designed for DH bikes with single front chain rings.0 -
changing the rear mech will make very very little difference.
about the only thing that would be worth looking at is a roller that fits under the chain at the crankset end. you can get some that work with 3 rings. but i would not bother as you will find that the chain will come off less the more your ride."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
