Campag chainring bolts

I was going to remove my Campag.chainring bolts but they appear to be different from the normal bolts ie Shimano which take a standard 5mm hex key. The Campag appears to use a 4mm hex key but this just turns in the head as it's slightly to small.Do I need something else? I know the slotted nuts at the back of the chainrings require a tool to fit in the slots.

Thanks

That's strange! I just changed my Campag chainrings yesterday and didn't have any problem finding a hex key to suit. The same key fits the bolts on my 1999 Athena triple chainset and my 2002 Chorus double chainset. Is your hex key worn?

No. The bolts have a star-shaped torx look to them. I suspect a Campag specific tool is required. They are 4mm bolts. They are Campag bolts according to the writing on them

My Campag chainsets take either a normal allen key or a T25 torx key

UltraTorque chainsets use Torx-headed chainring bolts.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

... and Torx keys are standard on many multi tools and drive bit sets. Have a root around and you may well find you have the tool already.

Ah, I've got one of them - I didn't know what it was. Don't need it (yet) mind you...

They are indeed Torx bolts. Only Campag have gone down this route and it allows them to charge £12 per bolt I'm informed. They changed about 3 years ago. I now have a suitable torx headed key

FSA use Torx bolts too - my Gossamer actually came with a Torx key which was also the same size as the one campag uses.

It's the nuts on the other side that do my head in. Almost impossible not to let the screw driver slip at some point and gouge the alloy, then it's even more likely to happen next time. The official campag tool is even worse, the two little pins fit right on the edge of the slot with nothing to hold them in the right place.

I've just got a Centaur carbon crankset and the bolts on that are not 4mm or T25 torx.
They look like Torx but a T25 just spins, the next Torx size up is to big.
I did manage to undo them with flat blade screwdrivers on either side.
It not ideal as I don't know what head it is, I spent along time in the fastening game and I'm stuck on this one.
I do know that you cant use other chainring bolts as these are a little smaller than normal, maybe because of the carbon spider?

The chainring bolts on campag UT chainsets are not T25 torx - they are T30! Made this discovery in poor light... need to drill out the bolt now.

    Ah so they are.
I really thought I'd tried a T30 which does fit perfectly.
God knows what I'd picked up instead lol.
I just wish I could use my red Middleburn chainring bolts but the carbon spider mountings holes are slightly smaller than normal

    Interesting...
All these posts are useful, thanks.
I was about to change the Torx chainring bolts on my wierd `Bianchi' crankset (might be FSA origin) to regular allen kcnc partly to reduce needing different tools on the road/holiday etc:
