Is it necessary to wax-oil the interior of a steel frame?

Would do, but Dad (the owner of many a steel road frame), is intent on 'wax - oil'

Just hope it dosen't melt the frame :(

get it heated up so that it only goes in thin.

But check the frame for the blow holes on the seat and chainstays at the rear drop outs.

you may want to block then out or you can have waxoyl dripping on your discs.

right he is of the OLD skool.

lets say he is going to insist that you do it.

get the waxoyl HOT this is so that you get the thinnest layer on the sides.

Als get the frame warm. dont worry about making a mess as it is cleanable etc.

There is actually a proper frame treatment that you can buy (never used it) even on my '84 steel MTB yes a 25 year old MTB and it is fine.

all you really need is a light spray of some water displacer in the tubes now and they when you service the headset and the BB.

    Done it :D

got the oil hot (thanks nicklouse) and it was pretty easy.

Only put some in the down tube and the seat tube, but that should do.

Why the hell does it need any treatment of any sort? And what the hecks it got to do with your dad?

I have 25 year old steel-framed road bike which is still as sound as the day that it came out of the factory and it's never been given ANY treatment at all.

Tell your dad he's talking bollocks. And learn to stand up for yourself, he doesn't know everything. My dad used to be exactly the same. It wasn't until I learned to ignore him or shout him down that I started getting anywhere with him.

If you want to seriously rustproof tubes, ACF50 is possibly the best tool for the job, plus it smells of marzipan. But at about £10 a tin for something you don't actually need it still doesn't make all that much sense ;) Bit of WD40 or similiar makes you feel better mainly.

I waxoyled my Landrover a couple of years ago. It is a disgusting job. There must be better ways of doing bikes.

    http://www.framebuilding.com/Framesaver.htm

This is a spray designed to protect steel frames. Amazingly penetrative, apply a couple of coats few hrs aprt & job done. I used it on my inbred last year. I have never used waxoyl but it seems more laborious than framesaver.
