hi, i just got my new Dirt jumpe 3's (finally) and was wondering how to fit them. i know how to take forks on and off by loosening the headset ect. but new forks dont have the little ball bearing race thing on the bottom of the steerer tube and was wondering how to get the old one fitted on. is it best left to my LBS?

if your not sure what you're doing it maybe best taken to the lbs...

you can remove and refit the race with screw driver / block of wood but you need to get it squarely flat to the crown of the fork so if its a onetime thing you might be best popping to the bike shop :)

have a look in the FAQs about removing crown races.

reading parktools would be good as they have an article about fitting/sizing forks.
"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

  • There are special tools for removing and fitting the crown race but it's really easy to do it yourself. Remove the old one with a screwdriver, fit the new one and use the old one upside down on top to help guide in the new one.

You'll prob need to fit a star nut into the forks to hold it all together too and this is more difficult to get straight on your own. If you want to have a go, use an old socket that just fits into the steerer tube and keep checking as you hammer away!

Most LBS will fit that sort of thing for free tho.

    turn the fork upside down.

get a screwdriver and a hammer.

gently tap the race out, moving it around as you do, hitting it all around the circumference.

once iits loose it will slide off quite easily.

put it on the new fork and slide itdown to the bottom of the steerer. DO NOT HIT IT WITH ANYTHING.

push it down as far as it will go manually then, with the rest of the headset on, fit the forks and sit on the bike and compress the forks a few times. this will push the race into position and it will be perfectly in place.

are you sure because its got nothing to go on to its just a flat bit around the bottom of the steerer tube

    yep, thats where it fits.

the race is cone shaped with a groove for the bearings to sit into.
  • yhh ok just checking we were talking about the same thing
