Hi,

I recently damaged the 105 compact double chainset (crankset) on my bike.

I was thinking of replacing it with an Ultegra version. The rear derailler etc will still be a 105. plan will be to change these in the future.

Is this OK or possible to do? Any advice?

Yes, totally possible but I would think about the benefits that you will get from Ultegra over 105, balanced against the cost. Mind you, if the 105 is in good nick you can offset by selling on fleabay.
  • Perfectly Ok to do.

105 is an incredible group for the money. I'd go with another 105 crank to save a few bucks. Versus Ultegra, you'll never notice the weight difference. You will likely notice the money difference.

I know you're only thinking about replacing the crank but I recently bought a new Felt with full Ultegra - my sportive bike has 105 - and I've been blown away by the difference. The 105 is a great groupset, but I'm really benefitting from the step up.

Is there actually much difference between Ultegra and 105 apart from some weight loss?

    Shifting is better.
