The Clash - Reading through a lot of the archive material, many music jurno's at the time stated that The Clash were the only band that ever mattered. Even too this present day, some quaters still feel that way. Now having seen the Clash live on many occasions since the 70's I would say they were the best band I have ever seen live and I have seen quite a few. I am actually a die hard Stranglers fan, but I would say the Stranglers could never put on the stage act the Clash did. However, musically The Stranglers were superb as indeed were the Clash.

So, The Clash, the only band that ever mattered ???

They don't matter to me, but maybe I'm just showing my youth, and you your age. 8)
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

I've been to thousands of gigs, but nothing comes close to a Clash gig, life changing experience

was just reading a report on their gig at Newcastle Mayfair and it just kept going on about the violence, to be honest I can't remember any, lots of pushing, falling down, getting pulled up, but no scrapping

the Stranglers were good live, but not in the same league.

The Specials were special and still were when I saw them in April. Arctic Monkeys also stand out

Obviously, there are loads of bands I've not seen, but for me yes, the only band that mattered, live, were the clash

I think every era had a defining band/artist. Much as I love The Clash there are far too many other influences to make your statement. Elvis,Buddy Holly, Beatles,Stones,Kinks,Zepplin all of them have influenced the next generation to try something new. The sad thing is, where are the trendsetters going to come from next? I certainly can't see any on the horizon.

I love The Clash but to describe them as a band that "matters" is very 70s.

The Smiths are more important (and far more talented) imho - suppose The Clash "started" things off though. The Clash were before my time (and so were the Smiths). Got into The Smiths etc etc after the Stone Roses. Big Indie kid back in the day.

I remember THE THE Nick :D - some great tracks from them.

(Lloyd Cole's just popped into my head for some reason).

Self-aggrandizing music journos trying to come up with a decent quote, I'd say.

I always thought they were punk-light and hugely overrated

Joe Strummer always struck me as a sound bloke though.

for me bands like the Pixies matter more.

That puts me in the >35 < 42 bracket eh!

  • For the time and place they nailed it. Live they were exceptional. Truth be told I appreciate them more looking back than I did at the time. If you haven't already have a listen to the Young Gifted and Black cd, the Dread Meets Punk Rockers Uptown Don Letts compilation and Revolution Rock: A Clash Jukebox on Trojan. Top tunes.

In a moment of madness about15 years ago I got rid of all my old tour T-shirts. How I regret getting ride of those faded, sweat soaked rags.

Yep agreed, the Pixies are important - brilliant series of albums from them - still got all my 12"'s etc. Black Francis was the man :)

My Bloody Valentine are more important again though

They matter slightly to me, maybe I'm showing my age and the op his youth!

The Clash split up 25 years ago

    Joe Strummer is dead.

    They were just a band

    Get over it.

I must really be old. I remember both. Although, I do actually own a Clash CD as opposed to the Boomtown Rats.

Hugh Cornwell once reported, after one of the Stranglers gigs, Joe Strummer came up and was crying on his shoulder saying " why can't I be in a band like the Stranglers"

I saw the Clash a couple of times, including the gig at the Glasgow Apollo that was filmed for the Rudeboy film - there was a big punch-up with the bouncers. I saw the Stranglers too, but Stiff Little Fingers gigs had more energy. The stand-out groups for me, albeit a little later was Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny.
