Here's the thing.

I've pretty much not ridden anything for the last 15 years but a recent cycle-to-work scheme has me hooked again which I can only consider a good thing. In fact I've a Rockhopper Comp due in the next couple of weeks and can't wait!

As I'll only be doing short journeys (2-3miles each way) I could have gone for a hybrid but I also want to investigate some trails, hence the choice of steed.

My question is this:

My original bike it still at home staring at me. The cost of updating it was prohibitive vs the value of a new bike but I'd hate to see it go so I wonder is it worth converting to a hybrid.
What say you of a 1989 Specialized Hardrock Comp?

Classic steel MTB. Give it a service, stick some slicks on and away you go!

Convert it to a single speed and have a bit of fun with it.

I'm still rebuilding my 91 carrera, tbh it was a completely stupid thing to do, it's cost more in parts than it would have cost to get a newer, better bike in decent nick- whole new drivetrain, cables, tyres and tubes, saddle, oh and paint. And it's eaten time as well, researching parts etc. But still, it's my bike, I've had it literally for most of my life, didn't want to throw it away.

Once it's done, it'll be nearly as good as a Carrera Subway 1  So rebuild it!

    a nail?
    A Nail?!
    LOL

Ok I guess it's only ever had new cables and tyres. Oh and WD40! :) (how could I forget)
Still the mudguards and rack still work so slicks sound good.

Now where to source a 6-speed cassette and chain .....

..... as for the Sugino Bionic chainset .....

..... there may be trouble ahead, but where there's .....

6 spd cassette? or a spinon block?

WD40 on your bike for de watering the frame and helping to reduce rust.

that is it. it can cause more problems than it can help.

All I know is Suntour XCE Accushift 4050 mechs and SIS shifters, 6-speed with freewheel, Sugino Bionic chainset and dia-comp brakes.

Oh heck I've overcomplicated it. You're right.

A thorough clean and lube. New brake blocks and cables plus a set of slicks will have it all together :)

    Ta allround!

^this is what I did to a 20 year old cannondale M800. cheap-as (30quid for the convert kit) and opened up a whole new area of riding for me. Now I've replaced it with something SS specific and I'm rejigging the cannondale with roadie ratios and slicks for my Brother to commute on in London. The Beast lives on!
