I am a fairly hefty rider at about 15 stione, can anyone reccommend a pair of cross wheels which could take a good bump or 2 and could possibly double up for the commute. (Never sure where cross should go, is it MTB or Road, doesnt seem to fit anywhere!

handbuilts are the obvious choice, as you can spec them to suit.

    what's your budget?
    Shimano/Campag?

So as a general rule of thumb would it be a fair assumption that the "larger rider" (I'm 16 st) would be best suited opting for a Cyclocross bike.

I've been looking at Obrea Onix and don't fancy splashing £1K if its not going to take the weight or I've got to change the wheels cause I like a cream cake or three and a beer

Has anyone ever had wheels fall apart because they weigh 15st? It's not that heavy FFS.

    Tony,

I don't think you necessarily need a 'cross bike but a triple chainring might be helpful if you are not so fit. Also, a friend of mine who's on the hefty side kept getting punctures on his road bike. He switched up to 28mm tyres and these have stopped.

Cheers Steve - Run 28mm on the commuter and never had an issue just wondered if wheels would be a problem or something I'd need to do a bit more research into

Not so unfit!! play footie three times a week and commute 100 miles during the week just have carry some xs

  • pretty much any decent wheel will stand up to 'cross. what's your budget?

a set of mavic open pros on Hope pro3's are a good option - the pro 3's have excellent sealing - they'll last for ages.

if you want factory wheels, well, you've got a massive choice. I like the bontrager race-lites myself.
