Thicker Handlebar?

I ride a Giant SCR and would like "thicker" bars. I had a Roubaix and the handlebar was nice and thick and felt great to hold. I recently bought some Ritchey bars off of ebay and thought they were larger diameter all round as they were described as oversize (31.8mm) but this measurement only applied to the stem mounting section! I have bought some Giant cork/gel tape but feel this might not make enough difference.

Anyone have any ideas (apart from buying the Spesh Ergo bars for £29.95 & stem for similar money!)?

The Planet-X Superlight Constant Diameter bars are thick all across the top. They are £29.95, but I got some on eBay for £10.

Pro Vibe bars are oversize all along the top. Too thick for me though.

Have you tried specialized bar phat tape?

It has padding strips that you put on the bars, and then tape over.
  • Thanks for the input guys. I`ll take a look at the Specialized Bar Phat tape as this seems to be a potentially economical solution and, if not, the Pro bars.

What about double wrapping the bars with 2 layers of tape? This made my bars much nicer.

Choosing standard bars and thickening them with tape might sound a good idea grip-wise, but I don't think it would do much for stiffness. I love my oversize bars and when I recently went into my local village on my old Giant with its standard bars it actually felt really alien to me, even though I used that machine for over three years until just before last Christmas.

It's probably best to pick one setup for bars, stem, saddle and pedals - and stick with them.
