I was wondering about this but was also put off by the lack of specs on the chainreactions site and web in general.

I emailed them and they say they're working on it but I've put the specs on here for others that may be interested.

Unfortunately them not updating their website caused me enough doubt to go elsewhere and I bought second hand.

Not updating website = loss of at least one lot of 325 as I'd probably have gone for it as the spec doesn't look too bad at this price for a new beginners bike what with the current raising prices etc.

Anyways...hope this helps someone.

I've been pondering this bike for a while now & finally ordered it today. I was put off by the fact CRC had no details & I couldn't find out anything about Vitus but in the end I took the plunge. For that sort of money I'm not expecting too much and should suffice for my 15 mile commute.

Well done for taking the plunge, would you be kind enough to post a little review for the cheapskates on here. Me included. I have a nasty habit of killing bikes so may need to consider this again at some point!

Well done for taking the plunge

More like foolish! I'm a MTBer so know nothing about road bikes but a roadie mate reckons it's an OK spec.

I also had the the Carrera Virtuso, Claud Butler, Criterium, Raleigh Airlite 200 on my shortlist. Halfords have put up the price of the Virtuso by £50 (no doubt it will soon be in their sales at a big reduction). I ordered the Raleigh from Tredz for £312 but they emailed to say it wasn't in stock so I've ordered the Vitus. Not particularly happy about ordering it without sitting on it but there is not a huge choice in this price range so had to take a bit of a risk.

Hopefully will get in in time for a blast at the w/e & I'll post a review.

  • I've been having a look at the Vitus as well. I'd be really interested to see how you get on with it. Like Napoleon says, that seems very light for this price range (and I'm a cheap skate!).

I think because most articles are for the more expensive bikes we hear so little about stuff in this price range. Even the manufacturers seem not to bother - hence a reasonable spec but bugger all on chainreactions or the web! I think manufacturers figure that if you can afford better you will so then concentrate on selling you up (makes sense) or if your gonna buy the bottom of the range your going to do it anyways so why invest valuable resources in marketing it.

I'm really looking forward to some real world opinions of this bike. My bottom of the line older Raleigh Airlite 100 is fine for me at the mo. It's been a fine start to road biking which for me is mainly a commute and a bit of recreation. It keeps me going and no doubt when I move on it'll be a fine commuter.

There is a place for bikes in this range.

Unfortunately it didn't arrive in time for a w/e ride. CRC state that if you order before 3pm then it gets despatched the same day. However "due to a slight delay in our warehouse which has been caused by the amount of Orders that we have received in the last couple of days...". It was despatched 16:57 on Friday (2 days late) so I was surprised that it arrived on Monday.

When I got in from work I spent a couple of hours setting it up before my evening night school class. Had to put the bars in the right place, fix the brake cables & add the bar tape. Then when I got back I had a quick ride up & down our road. I found the gears quite difficult to get used to & the chain kept clicking/slipping which I put down to me being unused to the gears.

Next morning I ventured off on a 12 mile ride to work. Much clicking of gears ensued then after about 3.5 miles the chain came off. I stopped to pick up the pieces & could see the powerlink had disconnected. At this point I phoned the wife to come to pick me up! That evening I had a good look at the chain & the powerlink is really poor quality compared to the SRAM one on my MTB. It was fairly loose & disconnects really easily. I emailed CRC & they have sent a new chain which hopefully I might get tomorrow.

I'll do a write up once I get out on a decent ride. However first impressions are that it looks really nice, goes fast & is more comfortable than I expected. I'm not convinced that 9.97kg is an accurate weight as it only felt a few pounds lighter than my MTB & that is certainly not 24lbs!!!

CRC are currently knocking off 10% with the 10DISCOUNT voucher code.

10% off puts it in under £300. Interesting.

Shame about the chain and sounds like the gears need a tweak but will be interesting once you've sorted the niggles to see how it turns out. Bearing in mind if you put Vitus Razor into google this post is the top result, mudslinger you are at the vanguard good man!

As for top result on Google. Does that make me famous? :D

    Right let me begin...

New SRAM chain arrived from CRC Sat lunchtime & I had time to put it on before we went off camping. Quick ride up the road & it seemed fine. So ready for a ride when we got back on Sunday.

Was a bit knackered when we got home plus have done a lot less cycling than usual in the last month due to work committments but went out for a ride. 19.12 miles in 66 mins 52 secs which by my calculation is an average of 17.16 MPH. I couldn't believe I'd gone that far in just over an hour so I plotted my route in some mapping s/w & it confirmed my distance was correct. Having been used to just riding MTBs this bike flies along the road. On flat sections I was probably doing about 25mph - unheard of on my slicked up ridgid MTB!

The thing that has really surprised me is that it is a lot more confortable than I expected. However braking is a bit scary compared to hydraulic disk brakes!

Need to fiddle a bit more with the gears as the chain was slightly rubbing the front derailleur when in top gear & I couldn't get on the smallest chainring when going up one steep hill. Also could have done with a bigger gear range as I was spinning out out some sections.

Build quality seems very good & to me the frame seems really nice. There are some cheap components e.g. seat, pedals & lights but you obviously expect that at this price.

However overall I'm really pleased with the bike. Will be perfect for my commute & general training.

Regarding the pictures - yeah I know the garage door needs painting and probably doesn't conform to NapoleonD's spec for bike pictures!!!

Hi, I am looking to purchase a road bike and am not looking to spend a lot of money. I play hockey and want to get out on the road with a bike for some training and use for occassional commute.
Dont know a lot about road bikes as previous used mountain bike couple of years ago. the Vitus seems like a good price. How many gears does it have?? would you recommed it for what im looking for??

    thanks

It has 24 gears - triple chainring & 8 speed cassette.

I'm a MTBer so know very little about road bikes but I would recommend it as a cheap road bike. There are a few other I considered e.g. Carrera Virtuoso, Raleigh Airlite, Claud Butler Criterium.

Well I've only used it 3 times! I bought it for a 12 mile commute then almost immediately lost my job  I'm starting a new contract on Monday which is 30 miles away & I am thinking of cycling it once or twice a week.

I've done a 27.5 mile ride (16.9 mph) & 12.4 (15.88 mph) so not much really. I'm still not completely used to the gears & I need to fiddle with them a bit as they are nothing like as smooth as on my MTB however that was 4 times the price so much better quality.

I think for the money it is a great bike however I don't know anything about road bikes so have nothing to compare to. I'm a bit disappointed with the setup of the gears but a bit of fiddling should sort that out. I am really surprised how smooth it is on the road even though I hit a nasty pothole last time I was out on it. Great for eating up the miles & I am really surprised by how much ground you can cover. The only criticsm I have is that in top gear I spin out too easily so may look into changing the rings at some point.

The Carerra Virtuoso gets a great review in Cycling Plus as a sub £400 bike. Halfords put the price up to £375 & have now reduced it to £319.99.

  • Hi

I have purchased the Vitus Alios 2008 60cm which was £400.

Seems a good deal so far although did have to set up both brakes, handlebar tape (a chore) and the usual handlebars, aheadset, pedals , seat etc. The Alios 2008 came with clipless pedals along with shoe cleats (wasn't expecting any pedals) but i purchased some cheap flat pedals and old style toe clips separately as i don't have any cycling shoes or inclination to use any.

Only the gear mechs were cabled up and set although the front mech left a lot for me to adjust to be able to use all three chain rings (had to move the mech on the frame AND change a few end stop screws). The brake cables were not even connected and came with the full inner cables coiled up so i had to cut the cables to length and find some old cable ends to crimp on as these were not supplied.

The wheels are so so and could do with a true but i expect they are machine built. Hubs and QR skewers are cheap but at least the rims and tyres are branded.

I Should note that the bike came with cheap LED light set which is odd, a bell as well as the full set of usual reflectors. Safety first hey?

Overall, not that bad of a bike. I guess mine is all Campag grouping rather than Shimano and this is the reason why it costs £75 more as the frames appear to be identical except for the colour.

Any questions, let me know. :D

Yes I was surprised by the lights as well which I assume must be a legal requirement in France.

It comes with standard flat pedals so any shoes work, I had a spare set of MTB SPDs so I've used them.

This is correct, it is a legal requirement in France that a bike must be sold with lights the same way in the UK a seller must include a bell.
