Rear Mech Speed

Can anyone tell me if an 8 speed Shimano 105 derailleur work with a Shimano 9 speed cassette and chain, or do the speed ratings have to be the same throughout?

    8 speed will work with 9, it did for me. I used an old 8speed 105 mech that was from the DT shifter era with a 105 9 speed STI set-up.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
