Food advice

On a Friday, it's generally a slob out day.

I start work at 6am and am hungry, by the time 9 am comes I'm ravenous. Then my slob day starts, I have 2 bacon and egg sandwiches and a big mug of tea.
I then have to wait till about 7 before I eat again, a nice mixed kebab with fries and a coke

Oi fatty you may think . . . but, I finish work about 2.30 and at about 3 or 4 pm I hit the trail damn hard for over an hour. My question is about sustinance. OK, I might be eating the wrong thing in the morning but what can I eat - and when should I - before my ride. I'm quite hungry at that point and need a bit of a booster to get me round. I'm thinking KFC? Just a burger and chips to keep me going on the way . . . .

Can anyone help me out here?

I would say bran flakes or Shreddies for breakfast - should keep you full until lunchtime.

Leave it at least an hour after a meal before you ride. Then simply munch on fig rolls/bananas or energy bars on the round. Plain water or an isotonic drink works well, and maybe some jelly babies for qa sugar hit.

When you get in, east as soon as you can - pasta and tuna is good, carbs and protein to refuel.

    But it's a junk food day! :(

I eat healthy all week and Friday at work and my kebab on the night are my only sins. Other than that I don't do junk food as a rule.

From my sarnies in the morn I don't eat till after my ride cos after work I've still got an hour+ car ride before I reach the trail. If I chomp a few energy bars or cereal bars on my way, will that give me the hit I need?

    Cheers

I wouldn't eat anything soaked in fat just before a ride - will sit on your stomach and cramp!

    experiment time.

I've just had pudding, chips, peas and gravy.

I think you should do the same and report back.

No, it's at least six hours after I've eaten that I go out and ride. That's why I need the boost. I just don't think an energy drink gives me the oooomph! Sorts me out after but I need something before hand.

    Now we're talking!

I am a savoury guy, would much rather have a shish kebab than a sweet after dinner :D

That will probably dehydrate you - too much sugar in one go.

worst junk food besides fast food

OK, so if this was part of a health intervention case study for my degree....

1 day of pigging out isn't going to be a problem... however i'd change it a tad.

    1) Have a proper bowl of cereal in the morning.
    2) after cereal, you'll only need 1 bacon sw, have decaf coffee.
    3) have a shish kebab. its proper meat and griddled. usually leaner meat too so less fat. No fries, have salad. Coke is fine in moderation.

Booster before your ride? Get to tesco and get a fresh pasta. only £1.20 for a small one, stacked full of carbs, perfect for pre ride fuel.

You may be hitting the trail for over an hour, but any benefits you may *think* your getting will be balanced out/outweighed by the pigging out before hand.

I'm with ben on this one, sounds the best solution so far.

I personally like an energy gel (SIS Go Gel), as a pre or mid ride boost.

    Thanks guys.

I'll give the pasta jobby a go - and maybe throw in a shish kebab lol

Pasta can be made naughty with a handful of grated cheddar and a few drops of piri piri chilli sauce ;-)
  • sweet potato and plenty of it, full of all the good stuff with none of the starch and censored in regular potatos, plus they taste pretty good, couscous is packed full of good gear for out on a ride too, and its light on the stomach.

cant go wrong with pasta, fish, jellied eels(they find an entrance where they can, eels, eels, give it up now).

    just kidding about the eels.

You take couscous with you on a ride?
  • aye damn right, just a small amount, small tub in the backpack with some veg, better than a soggy banana, in my opinion

You not seen a 'stay fresh' banana holder?! You can put it in there half eaten and it makes no mess.

Theres no way I could just have a bowl of serial for breaky and be ok til lunch- I'm straving by 10.45. Maybe if I had a cushy sit down office job...

I do need to start eating a bit healthy though.

Ultimate slob out energy food? Battered mars bar of course! I doubt you'll get any energy out of it after your body has dispnsed the mamoth abount of energy needed to get rid of it again but hey... slob out!

As for the kebab - that elephants leg is nasty. Go for the marinaded chicken skewer just to the right of it.... the one that looks lovely and tikka as I'm sure it'll have less trooter, camel hump and censored in there.
