protecting bare (filed) frame dropouts

I had to ever so slightly file the dropouts of a new frame, to get the axle in, where the powder coating had obviously gone on a bit thick. It's left a tiny amount of bare metal, would it be worth protecting it with anything? hammerite? lacquer?
or not bother?

I've heard that aluminium will build up a layer of alu oxide onthe surface preventing further corrosion, but just wondered anyone else's experience on this.

Is this a frame you've built up yourself?

If not why on earth did you take to it with a file when you could've returned it to the shop you bought it from and got them to sort it.

Are you sure the drop out isn't mis-aligned in anyway?
  • quite sure it isn't misaligned..
I didn't send it back largely 'cos i bought it online and i didn't want the hassle - especially when the resolution would probably be to send me another one which may very well have had the same problem. And i don't see it as a worthwhile reason to send it back when i can sort it.
  • quite common to have to take a bit of paint off... I had to take a tiny bit of paint off mine.

Used the touch up paint that was supplied with the frame to cover the bare metal, has been fine since :)

If it's only a small bit, on the dropout, I'd leave it alone, to be honest.

As you say, a layer of Aluminium oxide will form anyway. Besides, it's in the dropout, so if you regularly take your wheels off, the it would probably get worn off anyway. Think you'll be fine mate!
