Kids Road or Cross Bike

I'm looking to buy my (tall) 8yr old a bike but rather than buy a mountain bike, I'd like to buy him a cyclo cross bike or something similar. He's already decided he will win the King of the Mountains in the TdF so a MTB wouldn't suit him!
I don't mind building up from a frame if it is the right price or buying second hand but I can't find one for a reasonable price for this age. As kids grow out of things so quickly I don't want to be spending a fortune.
Anyone know where the best place to look would be? Or make recommendation based on your experience of types as there doesn't seem to be many to choose from. If there are smaller frame builders for example that won't show up on the web unless you know where to look for example.
Thanks

Islabikes is a good option - they do road bikes - but they take a cross tyre\wheel - they are £350 new. I would forget ebay as kids bikes go for a fortune as so few are made - a better bet my to ask at local clubs and see if anyone has one they have grown out of.........but all in all kids road \ cross bikes are damm expensive......

Thanks guys. Yes I had a look at Islabikes but as you say £350 for an 8yo's bike is a bit steep.

    I'll keep hunting

  • £350 that's not too bad, especially for a bike that;s actually tailored for young kids (unlike scott's and treks bikes etc).
