Campy 8 speed chain width

I have a Campy 8 sp setup on my winter bike.
2 years ago I changed the chain for a KMC X8 and a new Campy record 8sp cassette.
I had problems with the chain clicking as the special connecting link went throught the rear mech so I replaced it with a Campy C9 9 sp chain and all was well.

I have just replaced the cassette with another record 8 sp and the chain again with a Campy 9 speed and have a slight problem now.
The shifting is perfect as it was before changing the worn out parts but I get a slight problem as the chain meshes with the cassette in 7th and 8th. The sprocket teeth occasionally catch on the inside side plate of every second internal narrower link causing a slight lift then it drops into position. If I micro adjust the cable to stop it the shifting becomes less good, I think it is due to the chain being a fraction narrower than an 8 speed one.
The sprocket teeth are made alternately slightly out of alignment to aid shifting and it is when a tooth that is slightly angled meshes with an internal chain link that I get the slight chain lift----I can actually watch the tooth push the link up initially before it settles down.
This is not the same as the rattling when the indexing is out, the chain is not rubbing on the adjacent sprocket
As I had a problem 2 years ago using a KMC 8 chain I am not sure what to do next.
I have tried putting the old 7th and 8th sprockets back on to no avail, I have measured the external thickness of both C9 chains and they are the same, not sure if the actual side plates are the same thickness.
The cassette is mounted onto a Campy 8sp freehub using the supplied 8 sp spacers.

Any bright ideas out there?
