Laugh at my friend!

Going for a 3-day trip in June to Glentress, Traquair/Innerleithen, and then somewhere else in the area, maybe Mabie. My friend, who lives just outside London and doesn't do mountain biking much any more, has sold his 26 inch wheels and now only has 24s, and is planning to ride those when he comes up for the trip.
Knowing him, he probably won't bother buying new tyres (got some 3 year old Halo Twin Rails at the minute, I believe), and he's only got one chainring at the front (with a long cage mech on the back for no discernable reason). The bike's a hardtail jump frame and I can almost guarentee he won't bother sorting out his long-knackered gears to ensure he can actually use all seven (yes, seven!) of them.
Now, I know that so long as you're happy on your bike and it is't likely to actually snap in half then you shouldn't be judged for the bike related choices you make. However, on the other hand, he's currently in China. So please feel free to point out his folly...
