Rear Mech Fitting Advice Needed

After snapping a SRAM X5 rear mech on a marathon event this morning, I never finished and had to push the bike back to the start ~&$£!!, I got an X7 from LBS and decided to fit it myself, fairly straightforward I thought and up until the point of riding it was.
It changes smoothly on the stand but of the full sus Rockrider under human input the mech moves back and forth up the cassette with the movement of the suspension.
By locking the front forks it moves less and with the smaller movement of the rear suspension.
I am guessing that it is to do with the cable tensioning and relaxing ?
Any tips before I give in....

your cable routing is wrong/too short."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
