campag 11 - can you run a compact 50-34 with a 12-27?

as per the title. went to buy a 12-26 for mt ventoux to day but only 12-25 or 12-27 is sold.

Can I run the bigger one with the regular cage rear d?

    do I need it ?...I know thats subjective but seems a little overkill....I bought the 12-27 but would rather have gone for the 12-25 as more practical elsewhere...before I open and install it any idea what "regular" riders use in the alps? Im only 70kg and have done lots of mtn biking out there ....but obviously mtb gearing has a get out ratio for mt everest...

    maybe but Ive bought a fancy groupset and only really want to buy one cassette for now and apart from a week in alps doing the etape I'll be in belgiium and holland as live in the latter
