KMC and SRAM links will work fine on Shimano chains (Wipperman too, maybe).

On that subject - I know that the KMC links are described as re-useable but does that mean as much as taking the chain off once a week for cleaning?

Yes, you could do it several times a day.

I have heard that the SRAM 10 speed ones are not re-usable however (9 & 8 speed are). All KMC are re-usable. I gave up with Shimano pins a couple of years ago - fiddly and costly.

I have heard that Shimano have a sram type connecter in the pipeline.

The KMC connector is identical to the SRAM one, I'm not sure whether they licence it or similiar. No worries about removing/refitting it often, unlike taya soft links and the like.
