Hello, I am a newbie this forum as I am looking to buy a new MTB this summer with a budget of £1500 max and I am very tall 6'4" but dont want a 'gate looking' bike if you know what I mean  I have seen some bikes looked good for the tall riders and some are just plain awful, people have told me to try a 29" bikes but I dont fancy that too and prefer to stick with 26" wheels, my first choice is hardtail but will considering full suspension frame, hope to hear your views and thanks.

My mate is 6ft 6.He rides a Specialized Enduro and a Scandal 29er.
He seems really sold on the idea of a 29er now hes been riding it a while, and keeps saying he might get a 29er full susss bike next.

I'm 6'4 too, I would look at which bikes you like the look of and go and try some for size. Buy whats comfortable and don't just follow what the guy in the shop says if it feels too big or your nuts are resting on the top tube then try a smaller size etc.

I am 6'5" and have found most large framed bikes fit fine. My current bike is a Boardman hardtail MTB pro and I am very pleased with it, very fast, well speced, well worth the £1000 asking price!!!
  • hi, just FWIW from a 6'4" fat bloke

I tried quite a few bikes before buying my Specialized Stumpy FSR 08 last year.

I know the same advice is trollied out frequently about go and try, but my god it is true. (i did not try a 29er, wish I had, but maybe for the next bike!).

I sat on many bikes, and assumed, based on my previous Marin Nail Trail, that I would need the biggest frame (my marin does now resemble a farmers gates, love that analogy! my god it really is too big). Not true.

Just 2 examples: the Scott Genius XL frame felt good for reach and position, but i was perched way high on top, and if I put my feet down my jewels were squished on the top tube. the Large was just too cramped.

On the Stumpy, it may be a bit boring, but for me it feels bang on. The Large frame is all I need. Sure, the seatpost is at max extension, but it feels just right, nice and chuckable, and I can be on it for a long time and it feels good.

Just go a and ride a few, prefferably back to back, so you can feel the difference immediately. Nice thing about being in Switzerland, there is a bike store on every corner.
