Does anyone know if you can take a bike chain on a plane in hand luggage? Solely for the purpose of picking up a weak pound bargain on a forthcoming business trip.

Cheers

Not a chance. It would have to go in the hold.

recently had a carabiner, that I used as a key ring, confiscated as they said it was a potential weapon (wtf?) so no chance you'd get away with a bike chain.

They took a carabiner ? I have one on my rucksack and never had a problem yet - but they can be a bit random. I had a Swiss Army credit card in the bottom of my bag for a few flights and neither security or me spotted it. oops.

It'll depend on the policy of the country from which you're flying, how that policy is applied by the airport and the individual checking your baggage. Just remember that the bod at the gate has absolute and definitive right to the final decision so, irrespective of rules and regulations, if they say no then no it is.

Try e-mailing or writing to the airport and asking their advice.

I flew out of Zurich last week with a cycle mini-tool still in my bag, 5 allen keys, and a couple of screwdrivers folded into a pocket knife shape. It got picked up by the scanner, but they were quite happy to let me on board with it. I think it is quite random, so I'll just take hold lugage that trip.

Hold luggage is a safer thing to do.

Otherwise, your bargain may just get binned

I got them through hand luggage OK :D I checked with the lady at the BA desk, she didn't know so directed me to another lady on the first layer of security at Heathrow T5. She wasn't sure so took me to her supervisor by the x-ray machine, the supervisor thought about it for a while and said OK, as long as they were scanned separately. Through they went no problem. I didn't mention, and there was no problem with the set of gear cables either. Credit where it's due, I was impressed with the polite and helpful security staff.

Presumably you are paid in a currency other than sterling eg Euros, arriving in the UK and shopping for bike components to take advantage of the weakness of the pound? Prices for bike components in the UK have increased considerably because of the weakness of sterling.
