Changing cassette
Can I use a mountain bike cassette on a road bike?
I'd like to fit this:

to my road bike to help me up the hills and need to know if they are compatable. I have a Sora rear mech.

I fitted a Shimano XT 11-34 cassette to my g/f's Sora equipped Trek 1.2 triple - I fitted an XT 9 speed rear mech that I got from the classifieds section for £11. I am not sure the road mech would take the 34, but would take the 28 if you chose that one (but then you may as well by a SRAM 12-28 ).
I also upgraded the shifters from 8 speed Sora to 9 speed Ultegra, also S/H for £25. She is very happy now with her "dinner plate" cassette, and can climb any hills she encounters! Transformed her riding enjoyment - she only started cycling 8 months ago but with this setup we can cycle anywhere. Maybe in the future she will return to a road setup, but she's not worried about appearances, just enjoying cycling.0 -
Thanks Alfa
I can't find a 9 speed SRAM 12-28T cassette, but I've only looked on Wiggle, CRC and ebay.
If I need a loner chain should I stick with the 9-speed road KMC type or do I need a different one?0 -
KMC are fine for both off and on road - just one type as far as I know. I use KMC on all my bikes.
The PG950 is the SRAM cassette, but it looks like CRC are out of stock at the moment. All Terrain Cycles seem to have them.0 -
I've ordered one from ebay.
Thanks for all your help.0
