Sensible upgrades

Hi, i recently purchased a Felt Q520 from Evans, my logic being that, although the Q series bikes at this end of the scale are not the best equiped as standard, the frame and wheels are good and so I could upgrade as time went by.

I ride at weekends so i'm not really hammering the bike, and I tend to ride trails rather than downhill. But i'm interested to know your views on a sensible upgrade path for the bike as one option (the other option would obviously be that I go crazy for MTB'ing and trade it in for a 'proper' £1000 bike!!).

My thoughts so far are chainset/mech, forks, tyres as upgrade items - these being low budget on my model - so any views on what I should consider??

Thanks.

What is your budget? It definitely needs better forks, but by the time you have addeda d ecent pair (say 150 quid), better wheels (150 quid), new brakes (100 quid) and better drivetrain parts you might as well just get a new bike.

Thanks, all. Yeah, I think that i'll try it out for a year or so, and then if i'm truly bitten by the bug i'll simply buy a new bike.

Thing is, this will do everything I currently need and so probably worth banking the money and buying a better on next year!

I'm going to print this response out and frame it! But you realise that with a sensible, sane thought process like this you're never going to fit in here, we're a forum of pointless upgraders, depreciation maximisers, and diminishing returns addicts.

replace things as they break with better parts. It is pointless to buy a bike just to change things. Also if you upgrade as you go th effective cost of the upgrade is much less given you wopuld have had to spend x to keep it at the same level.

The other best way to go is to buy parts to change things that really anooy you about the current setup. If the tyres arn't grippy enough or are too slow chanege them, spend a bot and you save weight and get better performance at the same time.

I think there's going to be some stiff competition for that crown!

Tyres will make more difference per £ than anything else you can do, I reckon. Plus they wear out so you can justify changing them!
