10sp and 8/9/10sp freehubs and cassettes - compatability?
Daft question(s) maybe but if wheel I've got which is 8/9/10sp can take either a 9 or 10sp cassette, why can't I put a 9sp cassette on one that's '10sp only'?
What exactly is it that determines which freehubs are compatible with which cassettes?
Is it possible to determine visually (or by measurement) whether a freehub is 8/9/10 or 10sp only?

10spd only have a different spline pattern. the shimano grooves are deeper/higher.

Ta - I thought the depth of the spline might have something to do with it.Higs0
