The Carrera Fury has better components out of those two. I'd go with the Fury personally.

The GT Avalanche 1.0 Disk 2008 is also worth considering and can be had for around £400.

I've never ridden the Mongoose, so going off speclist here, but it looks broadly equivalent to my Kraken, which is an honest enough bike but not a patch on the Fury. The Mongoose looks like it'll be a bit more XC-ish, if that's what you're after, the Fury's incredible value but it's a bit tougher than many people want or need.

I just bought a Mongoose Tyax Super 2008 and took it round The North Face Grizedale trail twice last weekend. It's my first proper MTB and it was a joy to ride. No problems and performed just as well as my mates more expensive bikes.
    Get one :D
Mongoose Tyax Super 2008 with just a few upgrades...

Been riding a Tyax Super for 2 years now, love the bike, very nice on the trails. I have not ridden a Fury but wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Mongoose.
