Flat pedals

Had my first day on some trails using my spd's and managed to fall cutting myself reasonably badly and only narrowly avoided falling on several other occasions.
I think it may be wise to get some flat pedals to use when on unknown trails or when trying something difficult.

What would you recommend for a good pedal preferably within the 30 quid mark?

Also what shoes are best? Trainers? Skate shoes e.g. DC's?

Thanks

Conor

I run the basic gusset slim jims with some old skate shoes. They do the job perfectly.
The jims have a more square shape than most other pedals, and are slightly larger, brilliant for the money.
If you want a truely grippy combination then 5-ten shoes are the way to go, never heard a bad word about them, although they will set you back 80 pictures of the queens face....

Before the entire rest of the forum arrives to do the same, let me recommend you Wellgo MG1s- they're quality magnesium alloy pedals at nasty aluminium pedal prices, made by the same people who make the acclaimed DMR V12s, and actually better than the V12s to boot. Pedals of pure win.

I use V12 Mags and Shimano AM40 Shoes. Great combo.

Slim Jims with 5.10, no complaints here.

I've just put some Bonty Big Earls on my trail bike. They are so grippy its like using spd's!
    They are quite big though

DMR V8's and 5.10s, just as good as my spds were, but a bit safer on the downhils.

Mg1 as ever. 385g for 30 quid, with sealed cartridge bearings. A 1/3rd less weight than most flats.

+1 for mg1. They feel just like v12 mags ( which feel just like normal v12 and v8!!) but for half the price and a lower weight. Mine have been just as reliable as the dmr pedals which irun too
